In his memoir, Counting Teeth: A Namibian Story, Peter quite literally had to shift gears as he traversed the country. However, “shifting gears” is a good metaphor for understanding memoir writing as you move from gathering information and research, to assimilating it, and then ultimately move on to crafting all that into story.
